Seed Tech Building

Seed Technology Laboratory

"It all begins with the seed"
South Dakota State University has one of the foremost seed technology teaching, service and research labs in the country. During a time when others are de-emphasizing their efforts in seed and crop research, SDSU Plant Science has identified crop breeding/genetics and seed technology as a critical area for continued support. Support from producers, commodity organizations and private industry indicate the vital importance of this area to South Dakota agriculture. This building is a unique concept, housing the South Dakota Crop Improvement Association, Seed Testing Lab, Crop Quality Lab and modern facilities for molecular geneticists. Located in the northwest corner of the Innovation Campus, the building will be equipped with a Bio-containment suite and much needed greenhouse space.

Phase I
The building is under construction and is scheduled to be completed in July 2010.

Phase II
There are four planned expansions to the Seed Technology Building.
Additional funds are being raised to complete Phase II projects.

  • Expansion of the crop quality laboratories including cereal chemistry, analytic lab, model processing labs.
    3,414 sq ft          $650,000

  • Seed Testing lab expansion for PCR/electrophoresis
    2,276 sq ft          $425,000

  • Molecular Biology/Plant Genomics
    5,691 sq ft          $1,100,000

  • Greenhouse Space
